Fallout from the Ashley Madison website hacking continues as Jeff Ashton, the state attorney for Orange and Osceola counties, admitted yesterday to using the site on his own laptop and public WiFi while at his office. Mr. Ashton denied actually having an affair with anyone and said no laws were broken.
At a time when most of us can get behind the importance of preserving privacy and protecting identity, we can also surely appreciate the irony in a whole lot of people getting outed in the recent hacking of the Ashley Madison website. Even the happily married may find themselves wondering if the highly publicized data breach may have a personal impact. Ashley Madison claims that millions of adults are seeking extramarital trysts, so chances are a friend, relative, or dare I say it, spouse, could be affected. The Associated Press states that the “sheer size of the [Ashley Madison] database – and the technical savvy needed to navigate it – means it’s unlikely to lead to an immediate rush to divorce courts,” but the recent press surrounding this monumental exploit by hackers sheds lots of light on the magnitude of infidelity in modern marriage. The guilty should probably not take comfort in the current resting place of the hijacked information — those who want to find the information will.
Whether your family considers infidelity a sin, a moral failing, or an unforgivable mistake, I advocate seeking professional assistance in the following order:
Step 1: Find a mental health professional
Step 2: See your physician
Step 3: Schedule a consultation with a great family law attorney
Florida has abolished fault as a required ground for divorce and instead only requires that a marriage be “irretrievably broken.” Only the spouses can determine whether the marital bond can be mended, but it takes two to re-build the bridge; if one spouse is done, so is the happily ever after. A good family law attorney will advise you of your legal options. A great family law attorney will advise you of your legal options and set forth a holistic plan for making sound decisions in all aspects of your life, from mental well-being and financial confidence, to protection of that which you hold most dear.
