Safe Driving Tips for the Rainy Season

June 10, 2019 By C. Todd Law

Now that the rainy season is officially here, make sure you’re being careful on the roads and stay safe.  AAA says wet weather contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic crashes each year. Since we get a lot of rain here in Florida, during this time of year it increases your risk of being in an accident unless you take the necessary precautions.  AAA has a lot of great tips at the link above, but some common sense preparation for the rainy season will go a long way. alexandra-mirghe-760824-unsplash Driving in Rain

Is it time for new windshield wipers? If you’re overdue for new wipers, you’re probably not able to see very well through your windshield in heavy rain. Also, make sure all of your headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals are working properly so other drivers will be able to see you during rainstorms.  And don’t forget to always turn on your headlights whenever you drive in bad weather.

Another overlooked maintenance issue is the tread on your tires. You can check the depth of your tire tread using a quarter inserted into the tire groove. As AAA points out, if you can see above Washington’s head, you probably need new tires.

Driving in the rain requires you to drive with caution and commons sense. Here are a few safe driving tips to remember:

  • Keep tires properly inflated.
  • Drive at a speed appropriate for the weather conditions.
  • Always use your safety belt.
  • Never use cruise control in wet weather driving conditions.
  • Always look and steer where you want to go to avoid losing control or skidding.

If you do get caught in a skid, AAA recommends you remain calm and keep looking and steering in the direction you want the car to go. Don’t slam the brakes as it will only make it harder to control the vehicle. There’s no avoiding the rain during this time of year, so slow down, use common sense and drive with extra care when it rains.
